What is Medicare?

Medicare is a health insurance program offered to:

  • Individuals that are aged 65 or older
  • Individuals that are under the age of 65 with certain disabilities
  • Individuals of all ages who have End-Stage Renal Disease
Part A Hospital Insurance

The majority of individuals don't pay a fee for Part A since they or their partner already paid its cost through payroll taxes while working. Medicare Part A (Hospital Insurance) covers inpatient care in hospitals, which includes critical access hospitals and skilled nursing facilities (not custodial/long-term treatment). Additionally, it also pays for hospice attention and some home healthcare services; however, beneficiaries must adhere to specific criteria to receive these benefits.

Part B Medical Insurance

Most people opt for a monthly premium to cover the cost of Part B. This coverage helps pay for various medical services and care, such as doctor's visits, physical therapy sessions, and home health care - some of which wouldn't be covered in Medicare Part A. It is important to note that only medically necessary treatments are eligible for reimbursement by your Part B plan.

Prescription Drug Coverage

Most people will pay a monthly premium for this coverage. On January 1, 2006, Medicare prescription drug coverage became available to everyone with Medicare. This coverage will help you lower prescription drug costs and help protect against higher costs in the future. Medicare Prescription Drug Coverage is insurance. Private companies provide coverage. Beneficiaries choose the drug plan and pay a monthly premium. Like other insurance, if a beneficiary decides not to enrol in a drug plan when they are first eligible, they may pay a penalty if they choose to join later.

Am I eligible for Medicare?

To be qualified for Medicare, you or your spouse must have worked in a position covered by Medicare for at least ten years, and you need to be 65+ as well as either an American citizen or permanent resident.

If you are not 65, you might also qualify for coverage if you have a disability or with End-Stage Renal Disease (permanent kidney failure requiring dialysis or transplant).

Here are some simple guidelines. You can get Part A at age 65 without having to pay premiums if:

  • You already get retirement benefits from Social Security or the Railroad Retirement Board.
  • You can get Social Security or Railroad benefits but have not yet filed for them.
  • If you or your spouse have had Medicare-covered employment with the government, then this applies to you.

If you are below 65 years of age, you can receive Part A without having to pay premiums if:

  • You have been granted benefits from Social Security or Railroad Retirement.
  • Board disability benefits for 24 months. You are a kidney dialysis or kidney transplant patient.

If you meet any of the criteria, there is no need to pay a premium for Part A. However, if you make a choice to enroll in Part B coverage, it will be deducted from your Social Security payment or Railroad Retirement check. For those who do not receive these payments, Medicare sends out bills every three months that cover their Part B premiums.
